Elm Tree Place, 2019

Carlton Victoria, Australia

Elm Tree Place has its foundations in contemporary Australian architecture. Originally designed by Nonda Katsalidis in the mid 1980’s, we reimagined the existing conditions through a highly controlled use of materiality and light, to create a sequence of contrasting and expressive spatial experiences.

The design has been conceived through an elemental approach – walls, floors and the articulation of light are considered as both physical and spatial blades, in which space is defined. The exterior is elemental in form and experimental in materiality. Corten steel has been oiled to prolong the patina process and black screening provides privacy between the street and dwelling.

Entering the building, the lower level is textural and minimal. Light has been manipulated through the layering of glass, controlled to create a sense of drama. Textured walls and dark timber floors reflect filtered light throughout. An internal garden provides a softness in contrast to the concrete and introduces the vertical connection between the levels.

The upper level is formed by a series of formal and informal living spaces. The kitchen area, centred around an oversized bench space, is designed to be a place of gathering, with emphasis on entertainment. The living and dining spaces are structured around the rooftop garden, with floor to ceiling windows creating a sense of lightness and providing an expansion of space.
